NCDSB students compete in skills competition
Seaway Mall was abuzz with the whine of skill saws, the pounding thuds hammers, the clicks and clacks of keyboards and the snips of scissors last Thursday. Over 200 Niagara District Catholic School Board (NCDSB) secondary-school students descended on the mall to participate in the boards annual Technology Skills Competition. Students from across the region competed in architectural design, auto service technology, cabinet making, team and individual carpentry, desktop publishing, electrical wiring, electronics, hairstyling, home building, landscape gardening, photography, plumbing, precision machining, video production and web design.
We want to highlight our kids talents, said Marco Magazzeni, technology consultant for the NCDSB. He explained that the board has run the competition for eight years now. Each competition is a career path, he said, pointing out that the winners in most of the categories proceed to the provincial finals in Waterloo in May. He added that the individual carpentry, video production and desktop publishing finalists first go to the regional finals in April at Niagara College.
It (the competition) is important for a number of reasons, said Magezzeni, adding, the critical one is to expose them to a career pathway. Magazzeni explained that with more schools offering specialist high skill major (SHSM) programs focusing on technical careers, the competition has grown to involve every Catholic school in the region. He added that the competition is a great experience for the students.
It was fun and great experience, said Taylor Hoekstra, who competed for Wellands Notre Dame College School in the team home building. While he and his team finished third, Hoekstra said that the competition was nonetheless an enjoyable experience. Hoekstra signed up for the schools home building SHSM program after helping his neighbours with repairs to their homes. After the competition portion wrapped up an awards banquet was held Friday morning for all the students participating with gold, silver and bronze being handed out for each technical area.
